Govt to spend Bt100 bln to spur economy

The government will likely spend at least 100 billion baht of the fiscal 2009 budget to stimulate the sluggish economy, Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij revealed on Tuesday.

The minister said the government will have to

consider the degree of importance of different projects and tasks cautiously

before spending the budget and he could not foresee whether the government’s

spending next year will lead to a budget deficit of 180 billion baht.

The Finance Ministry executives will decide whether

the six six-month economic stimulus measures will be continued, Mr Korn said.

Some of the measures that could be lifted include public

assistance on utility costs and excise tax reduction on fuel.

Chumpol says he will speed up tourism stimulus measures

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa said Tuesday he will speed up measures to revive the tourism to bring back foreign tourists to the country in six months.

He said he had several measures to speed up, including a measure to pay compensations to tourists affected by the besieging of two Bangkok airports.

Nya regeringen vill visa handlingskraft, läs till exempel vad Kungen sade vid installationen av Abhisits 35 manna kabinett.

Till skillnad från oss Skandinaver som fortsätter resa till Thailand (såg en siffra på bara 5% minskning) har ankommande turister från främst Asiatiska länder minskat med 50%. Dessa turister är mer känsliga för "störningar" än oss. Hela hotell-turistnäringen i Thailand är i kris.

Låt oss hoppas att det inte blir så illa som många spår, utan att den nya regeringen lyckas stabilisera politiken. Thailand behöver turister.
