Quarter of a million tourists now stranded http://www.bangkokpo...s.php?id=135112 Tourism and Sport Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said on Monday that the number of foreign tourists in Thailand has reached 240,000. The toll will continue to rise daily, he said, as more tourists reach the end oif their holidays, with too few planes to take them out. In math terms, the growth is exponential. Mr Weerasak held a press conference at the Bitec Exhibition Hall in Bang Na, which has been turned into a massive, confused check-in centre for foreigners trying to leave Thailadn. Flights arrive and leave at U-Tapao air base, 150 kilometres to the east. Passengers have been advised to check in at least seven hours before their flight time, to allow for the drive to U-Tapao. Mr Weerasak said he would do everything he could to send news to the world that Thailand is doing its best to send stranded travellers home. The minister added that he would ask for the special financial package worth 10 billion baht (about US$290 million) to help small and medium-sized operators in the tourism and related industries.
