Floodwater rises continuously in Nong Khai

Water levels in the Mekong River is rising continuously, resulting in flooding in Nong Khai province.

Officials of the Department of Water Resources report that water levels in the Mekong River near Nong Khai province have reached critical levels at 12.85 meters, and is expected to rise higher. The Nong Khai Office of Hydrology believes that the river's level will rise to 13 meters tomorrow (August 13). Households, temples, schools, and agricultural land in Si Chiang Mai (ศรีเชียงใหม่), Tha Bo (ท่าบ่อ), and the Mueang Nong Khai districts have suffered extensive damage.

Local officials are building sandbag barriers in several districts in order to stem rising floodwater but have proven unsuccessful so far. Water pumps are deployed in the Nueang Nong Khai district and are operational 24 hours. Aid centers have also been established for flood victims by the Nong Khai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, the Nong Khai Red Cross Branch, and local foundations.

Just came from the riverfront. The water is about 1/2 meter from flooding on the promenade, which means the Tha Sa Det market!

Mut Mee Guest house is now flooded completely.they were elevated furnishes this morning!

The Chaiyupon market was full of water all around the raised pavilion where the vendors are!

The Nong Khai drainage system is presently full and backing up into the streets and settling in the lower areas

It is not presently raining in Nong Khai, but their is heavy cloud overcast, expecting normal afternoon showers which will probably cause some minor temporary flooding in the downtown streets and entrances from the sois!

One more heavy storm tonight or tomorrow will probably cause an overflow on the promenade.

We are on higher ground,so don't expect anything but backup flooding on our soi.Probably enough to keep the car wheels washed

Hej

FLOOD HIT

Mekhong river at its highest for 30 years

By The Nation

Published on August 14, 2008

Heavy rains from upstream areas submerge homes and farmland

The Mekhong River has reached its highest level in 30 years, with floodwater submerging homes and farmland from Chiang Rai's Chiang Saen district all the way to Loei's Chiang Khan district.

Water Resources Department directorgeneral Siripong Hungspreuk said yesterday that it had been expected that heavy downฌpours from upstream China and Laos as well as in upper northern Thailand would cause the river to reach its highest ever level around mid August.

Yesterday the river exceeded the  record high set 30 years by 10 to 20 centimetres at some watermeasurฌing stations, he said. In Chiang Saen, the river was 10.49 metres, and 10.46 metres in Chiang Khan, he said. Overflows caused flooding up to two metres deep in some areas in Chiang Rai, Loei, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan. He said it was expected that the situation would be back to normal next week.

Chiang Rai disaster prevention chief Korn Pijadee said the flooddamaged areas were in Chiang Saen, Chiang  Khong and Wiang Kaen districts.

In Chiang Saen, 17 villages in Tambon Ban Saew, Sri Don Mool, Mae Ngern and Wiang were subฌmerged, while some 1,000 homes and 7,000 rai of farmland in Chiang Khong's seven tambons were flooded, he said.

Chiang Rai would continue to have rainfall for one or two days, the weather bureau warned yesterday.

In the lower northern province of Phetchabun, 10 hours of heavy downpours caused forest floods from Khao Kho Mountain to put a 500metre stretch of the Lom Sak, Sara Buri Road under deep water.

In Muang district, riverside residents were warned to brace for flooding and move belongings to higher ground, while Lom Sak district had local officials prepared for flood emergencies and the floodprone Tambon Nam Kor and Nam Chun were closely watched.
